PLANTING BY THE MOON The moon governs growth. Planting is most productive if the lunar influences are considered. We have long heard sayings about planting by the light or dark of the Moon. These old sayings refer to the phases of the Moon, which are the angular relationships of the forces of the Sun and Moon. However, it is important to also consider the nature of the sign of the zodiac through which the Moon is passing. For best results plant, graft, or transplant annuals that bear above-ground crops during the Moon’s first and second quarters. (An “annual” is a plant that completes its life cycle in one growing season.) during the first and second quarters, New Moon to Full Moon, the Moon is increasing in light. This is known as the waxing Moon. Following the Full Moon are the third and fourth quarters. This phase is the “dark of the Moon” or the waning Moon. The third quarter is the best time for pruning, the planting of biennials, perennials, bulbs, and root crops. These can also be planted in the fourth quarter if necessary. However, the fourth quarter is best suited for tilling and destroying weeds and pests. It is also the best phase for cultivation and harvesting. Remember, the New Moon to the Full Moon is the time to make new beginnings, the time to increase. The Full Moon to the next New Moon is a time to bring affairs together or to a close. The bruised areas of fruit picked in the 1st or 2nd quarters will rot more easily, whereas the bruised areas of fruit picked in the 3rd or 4th quarters will dry. You can retard your lawn’s growth by cutting the grass during the waning Moon. Conversely, you can stimulate its growth by cutting it during the waxing Moon. Timber will season better if it is cut in the 4th quarter in a barren sign. The most fertile signs, the water signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces, are best for planting. The signs Capricorn, Taurus, and Libra are the next best signs. Taurus and Capricorn will produce strong, hardy plants. For beautiful and fragrant flowers, plant while the Moon is in Libra, which is ruled by Venus, the goddess and planet of beauty. The least productive time for planting are Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. The first day the Moon is in a sign is better for planting than is the second. The second day is better than the third. The influence of each sign is greatly intensified when the Sun and Moon are in the same sign. Moon Void of Course (V/C)
As the Moon orbits the Earth it passes through the signs of the zodiac. Every lunar month it travels through all twelve signs, passing through each in more than two, but less than three days. When the Moon approaches the end of each sign, it goes beyond its last major aspect, or connection, with another planet. When this happens, and until it moves into the next sign, the Moon is said to be “void of course.” This period is a time when we can feel uncomfortably disconnected and without direction. It is, therefore, an ideal time for centering ourselves.
The void of course condition may occur for only seconds or minutes of time or it may last for a day or two. It all depends on the locations of the planets and their interactions at the time. While the Moon is V/C is it wise to avoid making important decisions. Judgment is probably faulty at this time. Decisions tend to be unrealistic, subject to factors unknown at the time. New paths are likely to be plagued with false starts, errors, and unexpected hassles.
During Moon void of course, actions produce unforeseen, surprising results. Creative efforts go in unexpected directions. Contracts, promises or new laws bring on difficulties. Purchases prove to be unsatisfactory or the object simply does not fulfill its intention. Routines involving no decisions will usually go well but often require corrections later. Delays and frustrations are common. Moon V/C is a time to “kick back,” let life flow and avoid putting yourself in the path of difficulties.
The important guideline for Moon V/C periods is to avoid being involved in concerns beyond your spiritual center. Moon void of course is a time for subjective, spiritual, non-materialistic concerns. If we have taken time off from business to give attention to relaxation and our spiritual growth during the Moon V/C, we can more effectively go back to dealing with the affairs of the day to day material world once the Moon has entered a new sign. ~Jim Maynard
